We often find ourselves horrified by the notion of being reincarnated as a mollusk, devoid of consciousness and possessing only passive defense mechanisms. We venerate the power and complexity of being in the role of a human on Earth – and it is, in many ways, a privilege.
Whether we have oversight or pride to blame, however, we often neglect or refuse to acknowledge the unnecessary suffering which comes as consequence of our innovation and self-awareness.
The hope is not to emulate the oyster, attempting to deny our humanity, nor is it to vie for the protection of an under-appreciated species – it is simply to draw attention to the fact that having a pulse, alone, is proof of one’s success. All of our chores and burdens, like our pleasures, are merely secondary to the task of survival, which is, in itself, ephemeral.
